Jacks take third at Districts

The Jacks tied for third place, had five finalists and 15 wrestlers in the top-8 at the District 5/6 Championships over the weekend.

It was a good start to the postseason. The Jacks will be sending 12 wrestlers and two alternates to the Region 4 Wrestling Championships in Ellensburg this Saturday at 11 a.m.

The runners-up were Andy Vargas (24-5), Iche Ramirez (24-8), Steven Gomez (17-10), Cade Wallace (14-7) and Rey Rubio (21-8), while third place finishes were recorded by Victor Salgado (21-9) and Samuel Rodriguez (10-8).
2nd – Andy Vargas opened the 152-pound weight bracket with a bye and followed that with a 12-1 major decision against Devante Maltos (Toppenish) and 10-2 major decision versus Julian Adame (Ephrata). In the finals, he lost to Brent Evans (Toppenish) 16-6.
2nd – 160-pound Iche Ramirez, a junior, pinned Prosser’s Andrew Showman in the first round and followed that with a 5-3 decision over Josh Williams of Ephrata. He defeated Selah’s Gator Newell 6-5 in the semifinals, but lost to Joe Rojas of Toppenish 3-2.
2nd – 170-pound Steven Gomez opened with a bye before pinning Alexis Garcia of Wapato at the 5:10 mark. He advanced to defeat Luis Rojas of Toppenish 4-1, but he lost in the finals to Ellensburg’s Tait Stevenson 7-3.
2nd – Cade Wallace pinned his way into the 182-pound finals. He started with a second-period fall against Carson Freeman of Othello and followed that with a third-period fall over Salvador Osorio of Toppenish. In the finals, he lost to Kerrigan Simpson 10-3.
2nd – 285-pound Rey Rubio pinned Juan Domoinguez in the second round and defeated Matt Derting of Ephrata 5-0 to reach the finals. He lost by pin to Wapato’s Noe Guerrero in the second period.
3rd -Victor Salgado opened the 113-pound bracket with a pin over Kenneth Flynn of Ephrata and followed that with a 14-3 major decision over Kenneth Plaza of Grandview. He lost 1-0 in the semifinals to Wapato’s Jacob Reynolds. He came back with a 7-1 win over Tanner Blair of Ellensburg and a 5-4 decision over Othello’s Jeremy Mendez.
3rd – 220-pound Samuel Rodriguez opened with a bye and followed that with a second-period pin against Chance Walker of Ellensburg. In the semifinals he lost to Julio Maceda of Ephrata by pin. He rebounded with wins over teammate Ian Allen and a 3-1 decision against Heriberto Pacheco of Ephrata.

4th – Raul Barajas opened the 126-pound weight bracket with a 3-1 win over Javier Gutierrez (Oth), but lost to Ellensburg’s Garret Cheney 8-3. He rebounded with a 9-0 win over teammate Devon Salcedo, a 5-9 win over Alex Guerva of Wapato and a 4-2 overtime win against AJ Au of Selah. In his final match he lost Garret Cheney of Ellensburg 6-0.
5th – 132-pound Jesus Guzman pinned Selah’s Jarron Telles of Selah in 25 seconds. He lost to Blake Deleon of Wapato 6-5 and came back with pin over Jose Acevedo of Wapato and Asai Villarreal of Othello. He lost to Manny Martinez of Othello by pin and came back with a 7-3 win over DeLeon.
5th – Julio Plascencia opened his fifth-place run at 195 pounds with a third-period pin against Romero Enciso of Ephrata. He was pinned by eventual champion Anthony Ruis of Toppenish, but rebounded with a pin over teammate Andy Vasquez and a 1-0 decision over Miguel Ortiz of Wapato. He was pinned by Ephrata’s Rolo Reyes, but won his last match against Garcia by injury default.
5th – 220-pound Allen was pinned by Danny Velasquez of Grandview. He came back with a win over Cresencio Estrada of Wapato before losing to Rodriguez. In his final match he pinned Othello’s Chemi Canutu at the 3:20 mark.
6th – Tanner Wallace opened the 138-pound bracket with a pin against Blake Driesen, but lost to Prosser’s Bobby Flores 10-0. In the consolation rounds he pinned Selah’s Hunter Steadman and defeated DJ Wetzel of Ellensburg 2-0. He lost to Selah’s James Garcia 10-1 and lost to Othello’s Collin Freeman 12-4.
7th – 132-pound Carlos Guadarrama defeated TJ Schneider, 9-0 and lost to Manny Martinez of Othello by pin. The sophomore came back with a decision against Christian McDonnell of Ellensburg 10-4, but lost to Clay Miller of Grandview 18-6. He won his last match by pin against Villarreal.
7th – Spencer Elmore opened the 145-pound bracket with a 13-2 major decision against Danta Duval of Ellensburg. He lost his next match 12-1 to Reese Jones of Othello, but defeated Luke Rhinehard of Ellensburg 7-4. He lost to Fabian Cervantes of Toppenish 6-2 and pinned Andrew Young of Wapato in the second round.
8th – Logan Deleon of Wapato pinned Julian Trejo. Trejo bounced back a 7-6 win over Micah Miller of East Valley and a 5-3 win over Kenneth Plaza. He lost 2-0 to Sergio Gomez of Grandview and ended with a 7-5 loss to Ben Garza of Othello.
