2 students hitch a ride to school in a fire truck

Two lucky area students rode to school in style last week, hitching a ride with Grant County Fire District No. 3.

Kindergartner Colby VanDyke of Mountain View Elementary School and third-grader Anais Gomez of Pioneer

Elementary School were the winners of the fire district’s annual coloring contest, which is held in conjunction with National Fire Prevention Week in October. The students were picked up by a fire engine at their homes and were dropped off at their respective schools.

All elementary schools in Quincy participate in the contest. Second- and third-place winners receive a T-shirt and the first-place winners got a ride in the engine. The winners this year were:

Kindergarten: Colby VanDyke, first place; Jasmine Vasquez, second place; and Dash Gillespie, third place.
First grade: Jade Guerrero, first place; Abraham Gomez, second place; and Payton Stredwick, third place.
Second grade: Jenni Garcia, first place; Elizabeth Vasquez, second place; and Yostin Calderilla, third place.
Third grade: Anais Gomez, first place; Emilee Linscott, second place; and Brock Turner, third place.
George Elementary School: Yazmin Ramirez, first place; Gaby Vera, second place; and Stephani Guerrero, third place.
