Clarence Overen

Clarence T. Overen, a lifelong resident of Quincy, passed away at age 85 on June 23, 2010 at the Quincy Convalescent Center. He was born Feb. 28, 1925 to Ole and Agnes (Larson) Overen on the family homestead 12 miles north of Quincy, the fifth of eight children. He attended schools in Quincy, graduating in 1943.

Clarence entered the U.S. Army during World War II, and served as a machine gunner from 1943 to 1946 in the European Theatre, receiving the Combat Infantry Badge, American Theatre Service Medal, the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, the Expert M1 Rifleman, and the Victory Medal. He fought in the Rhineland and Central Europe battles during 1944 and 1945.

He returned home to continue farming with his brother, Ivan, and married Georgian Petrak in 1959. After retiring from farming, he became active in the Habitat for Humanity, and purchased the building that is the Habitat's Thrift Store. He was an avid gardener, and took great pride in his lawn and yard. He also loved spending time and playing with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Georgian, of the home; daughters Debbie (Doug) Van Velkinburgh of Portland, Ore. and Marina Overen of Cheney; grandchildren Katie and Kyle Van Velkinburgh of Portland, Ore.; sister Loretta Riegel of Redmond; brother Don Overen of Montgomery, Ala., and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Esther Grant and Neva Flint; and brothers, Goodwin Overen, Ivan Overen and Oroville Overen.

Graveside funeral services were held Saturday, June 26 at 10 a.m. at the Quincy Valley Cemetery.

Remembrances may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Quincy Convalescent Center.
