Jacks ousted
Jay Cedergreen's last QHS basketball game yielded 11 points and six rebounds.
The Jacks basketball team bowed out of the district tournament gracefully, but not without making a little bit of noise.
Last week they upset fifth-seeded Ellensburg 45-43 and followed that Friday with a loss to Grandview (15-8) by seven points and, ultimately, was bounced by Selah (16-7) on Tuesday by 15 points. Quincy (5-18) had their chances in each game, closing the gap in the fourth quarter to get within five against the Hounds and within seven against the Vikings.
“We came along way,” said head coach Wade Petersen. “We started the season losing 10 in a row and ended the season as a legit state contender. It tells you a lot about the kids.”

Selah 61, Quincy 46
In the end, the Jacks had two things going against them in their final game of the season – turnovers and foul trouble. Quincy had 20 turnovers in the first half and by the end of the third quarter, had 15 fouls to Selah’s six.
“We had massive foul trouble tonight and we couldn’t get into a rhythm,” Petersen said. “We also had too many turnovers. We had 14 in the first half. Half our possessions were turnovers in the first half. We just couldn’t take care of the ball.
“We didn’t play very well tonight and that’s the honest truth, but with as bad as we played, we still had our chances.”
Selah standout Nick Longmire scored seven of his 15 points in the first quarter, but it was Drew Washut who was the game's MVP. The 6-foot, 4-inch Viking had 19 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists and six blocks.
The Jacks countered with Jay Cedergreen, who played his final game as a Jackrabbit. The senior All-leaguer had 11 points, six rebounds and three steals, while Jordan Booth capped his career with eight points and two rebounds.
Luke Grigg added 11 points, five rebounds and two assists, while Braulio Flores had nine points and 10 rebounds.
Grandview 48, Quincy 41
The Jacks faced an 11-point deficit heading into the final period against Grandview last Thursday, but kept chipping away.
Jay Cedergreen (eight points, 11 rebounds, three assists) came alive with six in the quarter, while Luke Grigg (16 points) added a pair of free throws and Braulio Flores (eight points, five rebounds) capped off Quincy’s scoring with a lay-in with one minute remaining. The Flores bucket put the score at 46-41 and the next 47 seconds saw a trio of turnovers and two fouls combined between the Jacks and Greyhounds.
“We had the looks,” Petersen. “We cut it to five and we had a couple of good looks in a row and couldn’t get it to drop.”
Quincy was unable to find the hoop and Derek Newhouse (15 points, 10 rebounds, four blocks) scored the last points for the final of 48-41. The Greyhounds had eight 3s on the night with Adrian Vela scoring 12 points
The Jacks also had six points and four rebounds from Mario Martinez and eight rebounds from Chase Petersen.
