Jacks send trio to state
Webley, Valdovinos, Ybarra head to Mat Classic XXII
Referee Randy Pendrose awards Breck Webley two reversal points as assisant coach Arnold Ybarra (left) and Clint Webley (middle) celebrate the 160-pounder's semifinal win over Ellensburg's Tyler Coates.
There are three critical components to this year's Quincy High School wrestling team – leadership, work ethic and strength.
Those qualities can be found in Mat Classic XXII-bound wrestlers Breck Webley, Baldo Valdovinos and Manny Ybarra.
The trio of Jacks found a way out of the Region IV Wrestling Tournament last weekend and are headed to the state wrestling championships at the Tacoma Dome this weekend.

Webley placed second in the 160-pound weight bracket, while 189-pounder Valdovinos and 130-pounder Ybarra placed third. The top five placers in each bracket advanced to state with the sixth-place finisher going as the alternate. Quincy sends Daniel Herrera as the alternate at 215 pounds.
“We are hoping to continue this success into the state tournament,” coach Greg Martinez said. “If Manny, Breck and Baldo can put together another good tournament, they should all be around to day two and earn a state medal.”
Breck Webley
26-13 • 160 pounds
Webley entered the tournament as a fourth seed out of the CWAC and had to battle his way to the finals. He pinned his first opponent, Trevor Askeland of Cheney, at the two-minute, 48-second mark of the second period. He advanced to face the top seed out of the Great Northern League, Aaron Frank of Deer Park, and again earned a second period fall at the 3:19 mark.
“I just knew if I wrestled my way I could beat him,” Webley said.
On the second day he opened with a come-from-behind win over Ellensburg’s Tyler Coates. After two periods were in the books and several stall warnings had been called on both Webley and Coates, the Ellensburg wrestler had a 2-1 lead. Webley chose the down position in the third round and after a minute of mat time he was unable to escape, but at the same time Coates was called for stalling and Quincy got one point, knotting the bout at 2. It was also the time both wrestlers seemed to be running out of steam.
“I knew he couldn’t go a full three rounds at 100 percent,” Webley said.
But in the final seconds, Webley finally found an opening for a reversal and a two-point nearfall as time expired.
“I initially tried to roll and couldn’t get it,” Webley said. “Then there was like 10 seconds left and I knew I could go to overtime with him, but I didn’t really want to go overtime, so I said, 'I will give this one more try.' "
In the finals he was pitted against Amando Deleon (35-2) for the third time this season. In the first meeting Webley lost 13-4 and last week he lost 5-1. But this week, Webley was able to score on Deleon in the 12-8 loss. He had two reversals to go along with three escapes and a penalty point.
Webley may have lost in the finals, but he knew he could get there before the tournament even started.
“When the brackets came, I felt I could make the finals,” Webley said. “That’s probably what got me fired up.”
He also had an additional edge – extra energy for the first time in a long time. He was diagnosed with exercised-induced asthma earlier in the season and now uses an inhaler to give him the same air flow as the other wrestlers.
“The first time I used it, it was the difference between night and day,” Webley said. “(I thought) I should be tired now, I should be on my hands and knees. Like between rounds, I would usually be the last person back to the middle. I just don’t feel that tired anymore. I guess that’s how Manny feels.”
Webley (Q) p. Askeland (Che), 2:48; Webley p. Frank (DP) 3:19; Webley d. Coates 6-2; Deleon (Oth) d. Webley 12-8.
Manny Ybarra
34-2 • 130 pounds
Ybarra was put into a new situation at regionals - a must-win. The junior won his quarterfinal match over Colby Coates of Ellensburg 7-0, but the next morning he fell to Riverside’s Brenton Beard 8-2. He dropped into the consolation bracket and needed to win one of the next two matches to qualify for state. He met the challenge straight on with a fast second-period pin against Kody Ergeson of Selah at the 1:13 mark via a cradle.
“That was a snap cradle with a capital 'S,' ” said assistant coach Arnold Ybarra.
“I was kind of mad,” Ybarra said about taking out his frustrations on Ergeson.
In the consolation finals, he defeated Eduardo Montes of 4-2 to place third. It was a battle that needed to be settled in overtime after a first period takedown by Montes was matched by two escapes from Ybarra. Ybarra went back to his comfort zone to win the match with an edge-of-the-mat takedown 25 seconds into the overtime period. Montes fell out of the circle, but Ybarra held control and kept his toes inbounds for the 4-2 overtime victory.
After only his second loss of the season, Ybarra won back-to-back matches to nab third place.
“It wasn’t my best tournament,” Ybarra said. “There’s always room for improvement. It’s better (that I lost) this week than next week.”
Ybarra (Q) bye; Ybarra d. Coates (EB), 7-0; Beard (RS) d. Ybarra 8-2; Ybarra p. Ergeson (Sel), 1:13; Ybarra d. Montes (Oth) 4-2.
Baldo Valdovinos
18-4 • 189 pounds
Valdovinos’ road to state was the toughest of the three. After a first-round bye, he lost a wild 19-11 match to Cameron Schlotter of Cheney. That bounced him into the consolation bracket, where he had to win two straight matches to nab a state berth at 189 pounds. The first win was a 9-2 decision against Austin Watson of West Valley and was followed by a 9-2 decision over Keith Walden of Medical Lake. That guaranteed him a top-six finish.
With his eyes on state, he defeated Austin Bast of Deer Park 3-2 to reach the consolation semifinals and no worse than a top-four finish.
Valdovinos was trailing 2-0 entering the final round, but an escape and takedown inside the final 10 seconds sealed the win.
“That was a hard match,” he said. “It was pretty hard at the end. He looked tired and I said, 'I’ve got to go for it,' and I got it.”
His final match was against Selah’s Ryan DePaz. Holding a 9-5 lead, Valdovinos countered a throw by DePaz and earned a third-place finish by a pin at the 4:54 mark.
“Baldo is wrestling very well right now and has eight wins to only two losses in the postseason,” Martinez said. “Baldo has also continued to keep a positive outlook on life and wrestling. This is showcased by Baldo winning the sportsmanship award at the regional tournament.”
