Looking back into Quincy's past: May 20

Students in Quincy High School science teacher Tod Heikes's biology class spent an hour with Quincy Beautification co-chairman Norma Culp planting geraniums in downtown Quincy.

20 years ago: May 25, 1990

The new Simplot Plant in Quincy will begin operations next week processing peas and sugar snap peas following the ribbon-cutting ceremony this Friday.

30 years ago: May 22, 1980

The Quincy community has come together and pitched in to help with cleanup after the Mt. St. Helens explosion. A temporary dormitory for travelers stranded in the fallout was created in the gymnasium of Quincy High School, with volunteers cooking meals for them.

The amount of ash deposited in the area varies greatly from one location to another. Ralph Kooy did some calculations on the deposits and found that there was 29.6 tons per acre at White Trail Road and 55.7 tons per acre at George.

40 years ago: May 21, 1970

A long stretch of sandy beach is one of the features of the Crescent Bar Campground and Conservation Club being developed upstream from Crescent Bar. Fifty camping sites are planned on the hillside above the area for campers and trailers.

50 years ago: May 19, 1960

Vandals damaged the Quincy Carousel float over the weekend. Angry adults have rallied around the float committee to help rebuild the float.

60 years ago: May 26, 1950

Mrs. Fred McMinimy was the honored guest at a party given by the Blue Bird girls, assisted by leader, Mrs. T. E. Keightley. The girls surprised Mrs. McMinimy with gifts, games and dances.
