Why is the paper narrower?

By now you have probably noticed that something is different with this issue of the Post-Register.

The pages are an inch narrower.

Why is that the case? Well, it all boils down to one explanation. Newsprint is expensive. Trimming a couple of inches off a roll of newsprint is one way to maintain profitability without increasing the price of the product to the customer.

It’s no surprise that the newspaper industry is in a period of transition. Costs keep going up, and revenues are going down for many of the daily newspapers in the country.

Weekly newspapers, such as ours, have been fairly immune to these problems. But we can’t be overconfident and think this will always be the case.

So that’s why we’ve decided to make this change in size, along with our parent publication, The Wenatchee World.

There might be other changes. Many newspapers are now looking to offer advertisements on the front page of their sections and even on the front page of paper. (This is an idea that I’m still having a hard time accepting.)

I don’t necessarily want to see the Post-Register do this, but, you can never say never in a changing industry.

One thing I will promise is that no matter what happens with the physical presentation of the Post-Register, we will always maintain a commitment to informative, fair and accurate reporting of the issues that are relevant and important to the people of the Quincy Valley.

We will also give readers the chance to give their feedback on what they think about the paper through the Correspondence section and also through our web site at www.qvpr.com. We welcome any and all feedback about the newspaper, whether it is positive or negative.

The newspaper industry may be in a state of transition, but I do believe that newspapers focusing on quality, accuracy and relevancy will survive and even thrive in our country.
