Quincy swimmers take six high-point honors in win over Upper Valley

Tyson Beaumont was one of six Quincy swimmers to earn high-point honors against Upper Valley last week. He swam the 25-free in 18.28 seconds to take first place.

The Quincy Stingrays notched their first win of the summer and six of their swimmers earned high-point honors against host Upper Valley last Wednesday.

Rachel Lindell led the way with her first ever high-point honors. The recent QHS graduate won her first two swims - the 50-yard backstroke in a time of 39.62 and the 50-butterfly in 37.55 to set up a showdown with teammate Madi Petersen. Petersen also won her first two events of the night - the 50 breastroke in 40.07 and the 100-free in 1:14.10 So when the two entered the water for the 50-free, the honors were on the line.

For the first time in her career, Lindell won high point after out-touching Petersen by the slimmest of margins.

“She out-touched Madi in the 50-free by 4/10 of a second,” coach Jay Knodell. “It was her first ever high-point.”

Lindell was joined by Tyson Beaumont, Gates Petersen, Ryan Winkler, Rachel Horning and Cody Beaumont as high-point winners. Quincy also defeated Upper Valley 4.237 to 3.186 for a rare victory in Leavenworth.

“I know we haven’t beaten Upper Valley in years. It’s been at least five years,” Knodell said. “So that was pretty good. I promised the kids a free day if they beat them and I had to make good on it.”

In true kid fashion, the free-day did not involve much practice - if any.

“We let them go down the slide and play on the big surf board,” he said. “Nothing unsafe or against the rules.”

The Quincy times were not fast and many were slower than the previous week. Knodell attributes the times to the temperature of the Leavenworth pool.

“The water is warm, really warm,” he said.

A couple of Stingrays did have faster times, such as Sam Gregg and Reid Thomsen. Gregg cut eight seconds in the butterfly, three seconds in the breaststroke and another five seconds in the freestyle. Thomsen was able to slice five seconds off his butterfly.

“Sam cut a total of 16 seconds,” Knodell said. “And Reid is a natural born butterflyer.”
