Dance team wraps up season
The Quincy Dance X-treme Team wrapped up its season with a performance at district competition in Moses Lake last weekend.
Christine Morgan received a second-place medal in the 1A/2A/3A District Drill Down.
“The week before districts the girls worked very hard to improve their technique and showmanship,” coach Tina Olson said. “Although the team will not advance to the state championships they had their best performance ending their season.”
Senior and team leader Arely Gomez said she will miss the coaches and girls as well as competitions.
“We didn’t make it to state, but we tried our best,” Gomez said. “As a team we all improved in something during this season. I’m proud of my team and of what we have become.”
This year’s team consisted of team leaders Gomez, Jocelyn Contreras and Luz Viniegra. The team also includes Morgan, Caitlyn Schuler, Cynthia Aguilar, Gemma Jaimes, Leslie Contreras, Taleah Tarango, Yessica Garcia, Yvette Aguilar, Zaira Ruiz and manager Randi Reynolds.
Assisting coach Olson are Alyssa Castro and Lauri Davisson.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed my 17 years of coaching and will deeply miss it,” said Olson, who is retiring from coaching. “This is more than a dance team — it’s a family. A family from the team members to the surrounding coaches in other towns. The support that we have as coaches and for other coaches and teams is beyond words. The dance world is like no other, it’s a supportive, positive and caring environment for everyone involved.”
Gomez said Olson is more than a coach.
“Each one of us is like her daughter,” Gomez said. “That’s why we call her Momma Tuna. She’s always believed in us and pushed us hard to get where we are now.”
