Top 10 graduates
The Top 10 graduates of Quincy High School for 2008.
1. Katherine Pontarolo-Maag
Katherine Pontarolo-Maag is the daughter of Steve Pontarolo and Regina Maag. Her school activities included soccer, Spectrum Choir, drill team, Link Crew, Science Club and National Honor Society. At the top of her favorite high school memories is the Winter Wishes assembly where Mr. Heyen rapped Ice, Ice, Baby and several male teachers performed The Twelve Days of Christmas, at one point squeezing into girls' cheerleading outfits. Other highlights included battleship days with Pete, Mrs. Petersen teaching us about poetry with the egg people and the "archaic" machine, Heikes' birthday rap and Sadie's. Pontarolo-Maag plans to attend Gonzaga University in the fall, where she will study Spanish and education to become an elementary teacher. She said she hopes to study abroad her junior year in either Italy or Spain.
1. Lara Weaver
Lara Weaver is the daughter of Rick and Cathy Weaver. She was involved with varsity cheerleading, Key Club, FBLA, National Honor Society and Friends of Rachel. Weaver's favorite high school memory is enjoying all the time she spent with her closest friends. She said she learned to enjoy the ride. College plans include going to Washington State University, where Weaver will pursue a business major. "I look forward to learning about the area of work that I am passionate about," she said.
1. Rachel Heikkila
Rachel Heikkila is the daughter of John and Joelle Heikkila. Her school activities included cross country, dance team, track, Spectrum Choir, National Honor Society and Link Crew. Two of her favorite high school memories are when the girl's cross country team made it to state her sophomore year and playing the game "Apples to Apples" at the Kooy's house after baccalaureate. "I will be attending Central Washington University and studying to become an elementary teacher," said Heikkila.
1. Samantha King
Samantha King is the daughter of Dennis and Glenda King. While at Quincy High School, she was involved in cross country, basketball, track, National Honor Society and Key Club. King has several favorite high school memories that involve Mrs. Petersen, including seeing her hopping and saying "brinque" while teaching King Spanish as a confused sophomore and explaining Hamlet to King and helping her edit papers and speeches as a confused senior. She also will remember learning life lessons from Mr. Heyen, never having a completely uneventful day, crazy days and nights hanging out with awesome friends, the senior guys giving the girls roses on Valentine's Day, and cross country. College plans for King include attending Central Washington University and studying education, as well as Spanish and nutrition.
10. Maria Blancas
Maria Blancas is the daughter of Luis and Luz Maria Blancas. Her school activities included being senior class president, junior class vice president, sophomore class vice president, freshman class vice president, Link Crew, Knowledge Bowl, wrestling stats, Envirothon, National Honor Society, UDOC Summer Pre-Med, Pre-Dental Program at the University of Washington and Destination Health Care. Her favorite memories are spending time with her best friend, Gina, and attending school activities. She also enjoyed open campus her senior year, having Mrs. Petersen as a teacher, and meeting all the deadlines. "I am attending the University of Washington in Seattle. Then I plan to attend dental school and become a dentist in a rural community, hopefully in Quincy," said Blancas.
5. Kelly Rang
Kelly Rang is the son of David and Judy Rang. His high school activities included basketball, chess club, Key Club, National Honor Society and Friends of Rachel Club. His favorite high school memory took place in Honors English his junior year. "We decided to sing, instead of read, the play Macbeth. Shakespeare is way more enjoyable when you get everybody to sing opera style," he said. Rang plans to attend Central Washington to pursue a degree in secondary mathematics education as well as minor in business administration.
6. Courtney Felder
Courtney Felder is the daughter of Fred and Lynn Felder. She was involved with Key Club, National Honor Society, Drama Club, volleyball and tennis. Her favorite high school memories include when the senior boys decided to buy roses for all the senior girls on Valentine's Day and then the girls decided to make the boys go on a scavenger hunt that ended in a classroom full of desserts. "We were a very creative class," she said. Other favorite memories included watching Arnold do sit-ups during the Winter Wishes assembly and Mr. Heyen rapping Ice, Ice, Baby. Felder plans to attend Central Washington University in the fall, majoring in elementary education or business administration.
7. Gladys Armas
Gladys Armas is the daughter of Daniel and Ofelia Armas. She was involved in Link Crew, was senior class secretary and a member of National Honor Society. She said her favorite high school memories are hanging out with friends during lunch, spending nice and exciting moments together. "Our senior trip was the greatest. We had lots of fun on the rides at Silverwood and at Triple Play and the cruise," she said. Armas plans to attend Wenatchee Valley College and hopes to enroll in the radiology program.
8. Cade Yamamoto
Cade Yamamoto is the son of Calvin and Claudia Yamamoto. His high school activities included football, track, ASB, Key Club, National Honor Society and FBLA. His favorite memories are all the time he spent getting to know his classmates and all the good times they've had. Yamamoto plans to go to Wenatchee Valley College for one year and then transfer to Western Colorado State for three years to take pre-physical therapy courses. He then plans to go to Eastern Washington University to earn his physical therapist certification.
9. Molly Streich
Molly Streich is the daughter of Marcia and Eric Streich. Her high school activities included drill team captain, cheerleader, ASB secretary, National Honor Society, Friends of Rachel and Link Crew. "I don't have a favorite memory. I loved it all," she said. She added that taking three drill team routines to state competition for the first time was definitely a big one, as was when the senior boys gave all the senior girls roses for Valentine's Day. Streich's college plans include attending Wenatchee Valley College for two years, then transferring to Washington State University or Eastern. She said she hopes to become an elementary teacher and get a degree in childhood development. She also hopes to have her own dance studio in the future.
