Looking Back: Old theater to be demolished

The Quincy Planning Commission turned down a request from John Lee to re-open the theater at First Ave. SE and J Street and extended a variance to allow Alex Litzenberg to place a mobile home on a lot he owns in the industrial zone at a meeting last Wednesday.
Lee told the commission that he wanted to remodel the old theater building for movies which he said were now available to small theaters.
“The policy of film distributors has changed and I feel it would be an asset to the town,” Lee said.
Russ Brown, building official, advised the commission that Lee’s request would be spot-zoning because the building had not been used for a theater for more than one year and it was in a residential zone, not a business zone.
The planning commission ruled that since there was not enough land for the required parking, the building had not been occupied for more than a year and it was a non-conforming use, the variance could not be granted.
After the request was denied, Lee told the commission that he would proceed with the demolition of the building.
