Soccer wins back trophy
After missing a penalty kick, being offsides numerous times and being held scoreless in the first half of last Thursday’s Battle of the Basin, the Jackrabbit boys soccer team cruised to a 4-0 victory.
The game was hard fought on both sides, but Quincy dominated possession and wound up with a 15 to 2 shot advantage over the Ephrata Tigers.
The first goal came off the foot of midfielder Daniel Contreras. The senior missed his first half PK and was determined to get back the goal that got away. In the 44th minute, Contreras took an assist from junior Josh Munoz and put the ball in the back of the net, all while surrounded by three Ephrata defenders.
“I wanted the goal, especially for the seniors,” said Contreras.
The Jacks added their second goal in the 50th minute. Quincy was awarded a direct and junior Joel Moreno was tasked with taking the kick. He spotted the goalie creeping up and decided on taking the 35-yard shot. The ball soared over the Ephrata keepers head and into the right side of the net.
“I was trying to take that shot,” he said. “I saw him coming off the line. I just felt confident making it.”
Goals three and four came in the final five minutes of the game. The third goal was scored by junior Axel Medina with an assist by junior Fredy Ruiz. The fourth and final goal was a shot by Agustin Gallegos in the 80th minute.
“It was just a one-side-game,” said coach Arturo Guerrero. “The skill level is so good and hard work is starting to pay off.”
