Swim team caps season on high note

Gates Petersen and Gunnar Petersen capped the Wenatchee Valley Summer Swim League with high-point honors, while the team finished fourth in quality points.
While the Petersen brothers were slicing through the pool winning freestyle, breaststroke and individual medley races, their teammates were proving their worth in the coaches’ eyes. The under-8 crowd had a pair of swimmers who caught the attention of Madison Petersen.

“My strongest swimmers were Emilee Linscott and Keelan Razey,” said Madison Petersen, the 8-and-under coach. “They have both been strong the whole season and still are cutting time.”
“Emilee’s fly is great,” Madison Petersen said. “She is little, but her fly is amazing. It looks good and she’s fast.”
She also recognized two swimmers who had a solid championship meet.
“The kids who impressed the most were Stone Musson and Hayden Linscott,” Madison Petersen said.
In the intermediate age group, a pair of swimmers impressed coach Valerie Knodell.
She said the strong swimmers of the championships were 12-year-old Jane Kennedy and 10-year-old Rami Escure.
“(Kennedy) killed it. She has been steadily improving all year,” said Knodell.
Escure placed in the top-5 in all three of his events.
“Rami PR-ed in both freestyles,” said Knodell. “He’s improved on his flip turns and he’s been one of the leaders in the lane in terms of setting the standards.”
Gunnar Petersen, also a coach, said Taggart Hodges was one of his top upper swimmers. Hodges placed in all three events, including fourth in the backstroke.

“He was the youngest kid to be in lane six,” said Gunnar Petersen. “I moved him up. He has shown improvement. He was already good in the back stroke and he did really good.”
Gunnar Petersen also recognized Gates Petersen, who won all three of his events, including a 55.75-second time in the 100-freestyle. Both were triple winners and the team’s only high-point winners on the day.
“That’s really fast,” the coach said. “I ask myself a lot why he and I are good swimmers. I guess we have a more competitive outlook.”
