Thief knocks radio station off the air
When Cherry Creek Radio’s KWWW in Wenatchee went off the air Monday morning, employees called the Grant PUD, assuming there was a power outage at the station’s transmitter site on Monument Hill near Quincy.
But instead of a power issue, PUD linemen arrived to discover a man in a white Subaru stealing equipment, who fled the scene. They called the Grant County Sheriff’s Office, and deputies soon caught up with a 30-year-old man at Martin Road, near Road H N.E.
A news release from the sheriff’s office said that — along with $10,000 in radio transmission equipment — deputies found methamphetamines in the suspect’s possession. They also discovered images captured on a game camera of the same man loading items in the same Subaru during an earlier burglary in the 6800 block of Martin Road, south of Ephrata.
Kyle R. Schulz, a transient, was booked into the Grant County Jail on suspicion of second-degree burglary, first-degree possession of stolen property and possession of a controlled substance.
Sheriff Tom Jones credited Grant PUD for providing an excellent description, including the license plate, of the fleeing driver.
The station was expected to be back up late Wednesday.
