It’s time to sign up for library’s summer reading program

Staff report

Who says you have to put the books away for summer?
The Quincy and George public libraries next week will be signing children up for their annual summer reading programs.
About 350 children sign up each summer at the Quincy Public Library, said librarian Schiree Ybarra.
“We hope to improve that every year,” Ybarra said.
Signups start on June 15, the last day of school for the Quincy School District, at both libraries and continue throughout the summer.
This year’s theme for the reading program is about being active.
The reading program allows children to read any books of their choosing. (Early readers can read with a grown-up.)They keep track of the time spent reading and turn logs in for free prizes or raffle tickets.
“Our main focus is just to remind them that reading is fun,” Ybarra said.
Prizes are available June 15 through Aug. 30.
Teens and adults don’t have to miss out on the fun. The older readers (ninth grade to adults) can sign up for the summer program online at www.ncrl.org. The North Central Regional Library will be having online drawings for prizes for those readers, Ybarra said.
Along with the summer reading program, both libraries are hosting several activities for a variety of ages throughout the summer. The fun includes puppet shows, story times, special presentations and game times.
At the Quincy library, Ybarra said she is especially excited this summer to have so many activities geared toward teenagers and high school students.
Teens can participate in 3D printer classes, a Minecraft club and an advanced photo editing class. Space is limited because of supplies.
Book-It Theatre of Seattle also will visit the Quincy library in August to present a play version of the popular graphic novel “Level Up.”
Then, later this fall, Gene Luen Yang, author of “Level Up,” will be visiting some libraries in Central Washington, Ybarra said.
