Winter sports underway at QHS
Winter sports have officially started in Quincy, which means basketball has hit the court and wrestling is on the mats.
The girls basketball team had 47 players show up on the first day of practice; 25 of those girls are freshmen.
Coach Cory Medina, who coached the ninth-graders two years ago, is hoping to add a fourth team this season.
The boys basketball team had 42 players turn out on opening day. As usual, players opened with a mile run, a vertical jump test, bench test and a sprint.
Both basketball teams open the season against LaSalle on Dec. 1.
On the mats, 47 wrestlers – 38 boys and nine girls – participated on opening day. Coach Greg Martinez said he’s hoping to get 50 boys and 25 girls out before the first match of the year.
The annual Green and Gold Challenge, which determines varsity wrestlers going into the first invitational, is 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 2. The wrestlers open the season on Dec. 5 with a trip to Kennewick for the Bob Mars Invitational, which starts at 9 a.m.
