Boys wrestling team closes regular season with split
The Quincy Jacks boys wrestling team traveled to Ellensburg on Jan. 24 for a double-dual against the hosts and East Valley-Yakima, the last date on the team’s regular-season schedule.
The Jacks took home a split, losing to Ellensburg 41-22, and defeating the Red Devils, 60-21.
The Jacks took advantage of five straight forfeits to begin the match, then Jose Avila pinned the Red Devils’ Lance Gardner in the first period of their 195-lb. bout. Ruben Vargas added another forfeit at 220 lbs. to make the score an unbeatable 42-0 with seven matches to go.
Adan Ramirez lost by pin in the first round to the Red Devils’ Alan Castillo at 285 lbs., and the Jacks forfeited the 106-lb. and 113-lb. matches. East Valley’s 120-pounder Dylan Bangs beat Quincy’s Jose Buenrostro by points 4-2, but the Red Devils would get no more points. Jesus Buenrostro won by forfeit at 126 lbs, Damion Casillas pinned Carlos Lopez in the first period at 132 lbs., and Gregory Berndt earned a pin over Abel Gomez in the second round.
Against Ellensburg, the Jacks won five matches to the Bulldogs’ nine. Nate Ramirez outpointed Corgan Smith at 152 lbs., 7-2, Avila won by forfeit at 195 lbs., Vargas trounced Tyge Taylor 11-3 at 220 lbs., Adan Ramirez won by forfeit in the heavyweight match, and Casillas defeated Lanning Cooper at 132 lbs.
All the other matches went’ Ellensburg’s way, with Salvador Chavarin losing by tech-fall to Lorenzo Gonzalez, Mykenzi realme losing 8-3 to Brandon Mellergaard, Hunter Harrington losing 3-0 to Henry Rinehart, Berndt losing by pin to Cole Weaver, Paden Wallace losing by pin to Dean Child, Jose Buenrostro losing to Christian Davis, 6-3 and Jesus Buenrostro losing to Cameryn Bair, 7-4, plus two forfeits.
Next up for the Jacks is districts at Wapato High School on Feb. 1 and 2.
