Early goals propel ‘Cats past Lady Jacks
The Lady Jacks soccer team lost a trio of CWAC matches this past week.
Last Thursday it lost to Ellensburg (4-0, 9-1-1) 8-0 and followed that with a 5-2 loss to Toppenish on Saturday and a 9-0 loss to Othello (1-3, 2-8-0) on Tuesday.
Toppenish 5, Quincy 2
The Lady Jacks gave up two quick back-to-back goals to senior forward Mayra Fuentes, which took the wind out of their sails. But a goal by Jessica Thompson five minutes later gave Quincy new life.
“It’s shifting momentum,” said coach Eric Nelson. “There was lots going in our sails and then it was gone.”
The Lady Wildcats (1-3, 2-7-1) took a 2-0 lead early, but Quincy pulled within 2-1 eight minutes into the game. Thompson took a shot that ricocheted off a Toppenish defender and went into the goal.
“We changed the momentum and felt the shift and got our own goal and we were down 2-1,” said Nelson.
But they had no answer for Fuentes who had recorded her hat trick by the 34th minute.
“They came out ready,” Nelson said. “She just caught us by surprise.”
Quincy tried to keep pace, but goals in the 48th and 52nd minutes pushed the lead to 5-2.
The final goal came from Alysha Donovan in the 58th minute.
