Lady Jacks lose hoop opener against La Salle
Quincy High School’s girls basketball team didn’t start the season the way coach Cory Medina had hoped Tuesday night. But despite a 54-21 loss to La Salle High of Union Gap on the Lady Jacks’ court, he saw some positive things.
La Salle ran to a 20-2 lead after one quarter and a 35-6 margin at halftime. Still, trailing 46-9 entering the final quarter, the Lady Jacks didn’t give up. Instead, they played their best basketball of the night – putting up 12 points in the period to just eight points for La Salle.
Medina said La Salle played aggressively against Quincy last year and did the same thing this week. That appeared to intimidate the Lady Jacks through the first three quarters Tuesday, before they caught a spark in the final eight minutes.
“They play up in your face on defense,” Medina said of the Lightning. “I am pretty excited, though. I hope we can play like we did in the fourth quarter for the rest of the year. In the fourth, our defense was talking and their hands were up.
“They started working like a team, doing the little things.”
Kaitlin Ramsey and Erica Comacho shared high-point honors for Quincy with four points apiece. Elizabeth Nielsen snared seven rebounds for Quincy, with Ramsey getting four, and Siria Avila and Mashayla Schaapman each grabbing two.
It won’t get easier Saturday when the Lady Jacks go on the road to play Ephrata in a 5:30 p.m. game. Medina said Ephrata “always plays tough” and has experienced players returning.
“They’re always able to reload,” he said. “Ephrata is always in the top three, four or five spots (in league).”
