Looking Back, April 1, 1999: Boys basketball team looks back at great season
After a stellar season on the courts, the boys basketball team closed the final chapter with a banquet last Thursday.
There was much to say about the team and its accomplishments. Three of the five seniors on the roster have stuck with the program through the murky times, when the Jacks went 1-19. They finished their high school careers taking a trip to the Tacoma Dome and bringing home an eighth place trophy at 20-8.
“The last three years we worked real hard to turn the program around,” senior post Jeremy Bogle said as he was passing reins to next year’s captains. “We hand this ball over to hopefully go back to state and keep the tradition.”
For head coach Del Garrick, watching the ball being handed from this year’s captains – Chris Trevino, Abe Lopez and Bogle, to next year’s captains – Scott Bierlink, David Woods and Brian Harrington – was the most rewarding. He also was pleased with the compliments he received about his team on and off the court at the state tournament.
“A definition of good team is not just found in wins and losses,” Garrick said.
The director of the WIAA came up to Garrick and told him Quincy and its players deserve a sportsmanship award. The reason came from different angles. At a restaurant, Garrick was served a compliment on how well his players behaved.
On the court, their sportsmanship was displayed as they were one of the only teams who would help up a player they had knocked down.
