Looking Back, April 9, 1998: Program teaches self-defense
The community of Quincy is invited to get a kick out of church.
Robert Poindexter, pastor of Quincy United Church of Christ, is starting a Tae Kwon Do class that will be open to the community. The class is a free-style karate class where students learn to defend themselves and their loved ones against empty hand, knife, club and gun attacks. It is also a good way to get in shape and have some fun.
Poindexter said he wanted the class as an outreach program or a way to reach the youth who are at risk.
“It’s a way to keep the kids out of trouble,” he said. “It’s good for discipline and structure in life.”
The instructor of the class is Dace Sanford, formerly of Northwest Karate.
