Looking Back, Jan. 4, 1979: 14 year old boy solos in glider
The 14-year-old grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Al Twilingear of Quincy recently accomplished what most people don’t do in their entire lifetime. He earned his certificate as a glider pilot by making a ten minute solo flight beginning at an altitude of 2,000 feet. Jay Wheeler, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wheeler of Bass Lake, Ariz., received the opportunity to solo in a glider as his birthday present. Jay was not told before-hand that he would be allowed to fly solo on his birthday “because we wanted to surprise him,” his father said. For his solo flight, Jay’s glider was released at an altitude of 2,000 feet above the Estrella Sailport south of Phoenix.
