Looking Back, Nov. 25, 1949: Hoopsters to play opener here
With only three returning lettermen from last season’s Grant County championship team on the hardwood, the Quincy Jackrabbits will open the 1949-50 basketball season here Saturday evening in a non-conference game with Waterville.
Coach Mel Cheesman named the starters in the stellar game as follows: LF, Fred Whitener, RF, Don Overen, C, Henry Beckemeier or Gordon Westover, RG, Don Lehr, and LG, Ervin Webley. The preliminary game will begin at 7 p.m. officials announced.
In addition to the starters, the following men will be on hand for the game: Walter Grigg, Dick McMinimy, Jim Whitener, Lorin Grigg, Larry Hallowell, Keith McMorrow, Leroy Abbott, Duane Beattie, and Willie Milhorn.
“The prospects for the coming season are only fair,” Coach Cheesman commented. “The team is relatively inexperienced. However, several boys are showing up well in early season practice and the team, built around three lettermen, shows possibilities.”
