Quincy Innovation Academy lays out a new path
First in a series
Quincy Innovation Academy (QIA) was established Fall 2018. During the 2017-2018 school year, a community coalition was formed for QIA. The purpose of the coalition was to ensure all students have access and opportunity so they can achieve the Quincy Promise “All students graduate from high school and are prepared for the next step in their post-secondary education, career, and life.”
Also, the purpose includes having an innovative school of the future with community, students, school, and parents all having a guiding force in this education.
This opportunity is at QIA with the incoming Big Picture Learning and online program. Some key components for Big Picture Learning include: competency-based learning, which can be determined through personal and community projects; internships and job shadows; and crash labs. These components then are displayed with an exhibition where students showcase their progress and competencies completed.
The online program is credit-based. This program is geared towards students who are working or have other obligations that keep them from attending an all-day “traditional” school. Requirements for the online program include meeting with the online coordinator at least once a week to go over progress. Students are expected to attend the lab daily for the first two weeks when they register. Students are required to complete approximately 28 hours per week of online activity. Online students have access to the lab and any help that they may need daily until 4:00 p.m.
