Quincy Jacks wrestling team wins PanCan tournament for first time
The Quincy Jacks boys wrestling team overcame a stinging loss to Ephrata on Jan. 17 to take first place in the PanCan Invitational Tournament at Highline High School on Jan. 19.
“The boys bounced back and wrestled a great weekend,” Quincy head coach Greg Martinez wrote in a text message.
The Jacks won the eighth annual tournament for the first time in its history, besting their third-place finish from two years ago. The Jacks wrestled against Oak Harbor, Bonney Lake, Skyline and Decatur in duals. Quincy won all four duals, and seven Quincy wrestlers finished undefeated.
Jose Avila, Ruben Vargas, D’Angelo Aguilar, Jesus Buenrostro and Oswaldo Perez finished 4-0, while Efren Ramirez and Adan Ramirez each won one match by forfeit.
Perez pinned all four of his opponents, and Buenrostro pinned three.
Perez pinned Vernados Barber of Oak Harbor in the second period, Blake Koeller of Bonney Lake in the first period, Chris Lee of Skyline in the first period, and Sennai Heyliger in the first period.
“He had a good weekend and he was actually considering not going, because of homework,” Martinez said in an interview. When the trip switched from an overnight to a day-trip, the journey became a little more manageable for Perez, so he changed his mind and went.
