Quincy student advances in Lions International Peace Poster Contest
Evelyn Garcia, a seventh-grade student at Quincy Junior High School, has been selected the local winner in the local Peace Poster contest sponsored by the Quincy Valley Lions Club.
Evelyn, age 13, is the daughter of Mercedes Pelayo.
Her poster was among more than 600,000 entries submitted worldwide in the 31st annual Lions International Peace Poster Contest. Lions Clubs International sponsors the contest to emphasize the importance of world peace to young people everywhere.
“My drawing represents love and peace for the world and everyone getting along and sharing hugs and food and all the flags behind the heart to show that all places are equal and loved,” Evelyn said.
The poster was selected for its originality, artistic merit and portrayal of the contest theme, “Kindness Matters.”
Quincy Valley Lions Club President Edwin Sleater said he was impressed by the expression and creativity of the students at Quincy Junior High.
“Our club is cheering for Evelyn as her poster advances in the competition, and we hope that her vision will ultimately be shared with others around the world,” Sleater said.
Evelyn’s poster will advance to face stiff competition through the district, multiple district and international rounds of competition. She will be honored at a meeting in January.
