Rowell sixth at Kelso Invite
The Lady Jacks headed over the mountain to the Kelso Girls Invitational, which featured 56 teams, 420 wrestlers and 13 of the Top-20 teams from last season’s Mat Classic were on hand.
For Quincy, Kateri Rowell placed sixth out of 27 girls in the 110-pound weight bracket. The junior opened with a pin over Alyssa Edson of Warden and followed with an upset over second-seeded Tamika Pierce of Richland. It took extra time, but Rowell beat her for the first time.
“I was wrestling pretty well,” she said. “I beat a state placer from Richland.
“I had more confidence.”
The two went back and forth and Rowell held a 9-7 lead until she gave up a three-point nearfall to Pierce. She scored an escape to knot the score at 10-10.
In overtime, Rowell countered a throw attempt and scored the takedown for a 12-10 win.
“It was pretty much a pressure thing. She tried a head and arm,” Rowell said.
Rowell lost in the quarterfinals to Yelm’s Grace Finley, but rebounded with a pin against Malia Adams of Franklin Pierce. She followed that with 11-3 major decision over Alyssa Edson of Warden. In the consolation semifinals she lost to Tristen Williams of Forks 2-1 and in her final match she hurt her collarbone and lost by injury default to Amanda Gilliam of North Central.
