Rowell, Stephens place second in Connell

Kateri Rowell and Zahlee Stephens each placed second at the Girls Connell Invite on Saturday and both won two of three matches.

110-Rowell opened her bracket with a pin against Elizabth Fragga of Connell then advanced and pinned Marissa Garcia of Toppenish to reach the finals. She lost to Elizabeth Galvez of Toppenish, who was fourth at state last season, by a decision.
125-Stephens pinned Jolyse Rivera of Sunnyside to open her bracket and moved into the semifinals, pinning Miriah Guzman of Toppenish to the reach the finals. She lost by pin to Marizza Birrueta of Grandview, who was the state 106-pound champion last season.
100-Corina Camacho placed third after winning two of three matches. The flyweight started with a pin against Connell’s Claudia Guerrero, but was pinned by Dominique Garcia in the semifinals. She won by injury default against Grandview’s Ceriah Saunders in her final match.
130-Gabby Flores placed fourth and opened with a pin against Gabrielle Gamet of Toppenish, following that with a major decision over Jade Smith of Pasco. In the semifinals she lost to Nikki Velasquez of Othello by pin and in her final match she was pinned by Pasco’s Dani Gibson.
125-Dezarae Westra opened with a decision against Laura Mendoza of Toppenish, but was pinned by Olivia Garcia of Nooksack Valley in the quarterfinals. She bounced back with two wins by pin against Abby Negrete of Othello and Katie Muden of Pasco to reach the consolation finals. She was pinned by Alma Corona and placed sixth.

Vs. Wapato
The Lady Jacks had three matches against Wapato and picked up three wins.
Camacho kicked off the trio of matches with a first-round pin and Kateri Rowell followed suit with her opening-round pin. Zahlee Stephens added the third win, after she was awarded the victory via an injury default in the second period.
