Soccer takes second in league

Jacks head into playoffs as second seed

The Jacks capped the regular season with a 4-1 win over Selah on Tuesday, a 1-0 loss to Grandview on Saturday and a 1-0 win over Othello last Thursday.  Quincy and Grandview both finished the season at 8-1 in league play, but the head-to-head win by the Greyhounds puts the Jacks as the second seed in the playoffs.

Quincy will host the winner of the #3 Toppenish vs. #6 Ellensburg game on May 12 at 5 p.m. at Jaycee Stadium.

“It is nice to have a week off, focus on the next opponent, work hard in class and in the field, watch film, relax, celebrate Mother’s Day and have fun,” said coach Arturo Guerrero.  “And again, stay the course.  This is the key.  Our team has been very good, the players are responding, but again we still need to work on our finishing.  We have lots of shots and possession, but not scoring enough.”

Quincy 4, Selah 1
This was a lopsided game with the Jacks holding a 70-30 time of possession. Quincy entered the game holding the number two spot in league and Selah was already eliminated from postseason contention.
But this did not stop Enrique Rivera from scoring in the ninth minute. He stuck a 25-yard shot into the lower left corner of the net for a 1-0 lead. Rivera added an assist to Fredy Ruiz in the 16th minute for a 2-0 lead. Selah’s Josh Roberts scored on a free kick in the 25th minute to make it a 2-1 game.
It was only one of three shots by the Vikings (2-7). The Jacks had 19 shots.

“We controlled the game and ball most of the game,” said Guerrero.  “Their goalie was very good.  He had 15 saves.  Lets give them credit.  They are very humble and a clean team. They only committed five fouls.  Our team is very aggressve and we committed 11.”
The third goal came after Selah tried to head the ball back to the keeper. Jesus Guzman stole the ball and scored in the 31st minute. The final score came in the 79th minute by Mike Diaz off an assist from Daniel Contreras.
Highlights: Quincy goals: 1. Rivera 9th; 2, Ruiz (Rivera) 16th; 3, Guzman 31st; 4, Diaz (Contreras) 79th. Selah: 1. Roberts 25th.

Grandview 1, Quincy 0
The Jacks came out on the losing end of Saturday’s contest against the Greyhounds. Both teams entered the game with 7-0 records, but a lone goal by Grandview’s Victor Valencia in the 21st minute was all it took to knock the Jacks from first place.
Highlights: 1. Valencia (Alex Martinez), 21st. Saves: Avila (Q) 8, Antonio Garcia (G) 4.

Quincy 1, Othello 0
The Jacks put up 13 shots against Othello on Tuesday, but did not convert until the final minutes of the 80-minute game. Daniel Contreras found himself with a wide open shot in the 78th minute to give Quincy a 1-0 lead.
“It was pretty intense,” said Guerrero. “They had only lost two games.”
The Huskies (5-3, 11-3) beat Quincy at the end of March 3-2. The Jacks were without several starters during that game, but were at full strength Thursday. That led to Quincy limiting Othello to five shots.
“I think we have the best defense,” said Guerrero. “We’ve only allowed three goals (in league).
Gil Avila had five saves for the Jacks.
Highlights: 1. Contreras 78th.
