Softball picks up first wins

It took a while, but the Lady Jacks softball team found themselves on the winning end of two games this past weekend.

Quincy traveled to Prosser and won the first game 23-10 and finished off the sweep with an 11-7 win. The Lady Jacks are 2-8, 2-10 on the season and in seventh place behind sixth-place Prosser (3-7, 3-9). The top-6 go to districts.

Madison Smith picked up her first win of the season pitching six innings with five strikeouts.
“Madison had a good game, but we were making mistakes in the field,” said coach Bill Gonzales. “She had them very much in control.”
At the plate, Vanessa Sorto went 4-for-6 with three runs and Jessica Thompson went 2-for-3 with two runs and a triple.
“We were getting the ball in play and putting pressure on them,” Gonzales said. “Jessica had a clean triple. It went all the way down line. On those hits we had people on base, so it was easy to score.”
Highlights: Hannah Lindell 2-5, 2R; Hannah Soelter 2-5, 2R; Zahlee Stephens 2-5, 3R; Gaby Flores 2-3, 4R; Vanessa Basteras 3-5, 2R.

The second game went the distance. Kalysta Alvarez went all seven innings for the win. She had two strikeouts, but kept the Lady Mustangs at bay.
“She hit the corners really well,” said Gonzales. “The umpires were giving her the corner. When she’s on she’s on.”
The Lady Jacks took a 9-1 lead into the sixth inning and settled for a four-run win after seven complete innings. Stephens went 2-for-4 with three runs and a home run.
“Zahlee got it all,” said Gonzales. “It went all the way to the fence and by the time it got into the infield she was already home.”
Highlights: Lindell 2-5, Smith 3-for-3 2R; Soelter 2-4, Basteras 2-3.
