Students’ artwork on display at QJHS

The annual Quincy School District Arts Night returns for the second straight year to display the finest artistic talent our community’s students have to offer.
The event, scheduled for Feb. 28, at 5:30 p.m., will showcase music, choir, drama, as well as visual arts, all within the confines of Quincy Junior High School. High school students will also conduct art-making workshops for elementary students in the QJHS cafeteria.
Performances by the Mountain View Elementary Dance Team, the QHS Drama Club, the choirs in the high school and the junior high, as well as both schools’ bands will take place.
On display will be paintings, drawings and ceramic works, some of which students have been working on for weeks.
“By participating in QSD Arts Night, students meet all four of the National Core Arts Standards of creating, presenting, responding and connecting,” a press release issued by QHS art teacher Cassie Marchbank stated. “Students who participate are excited to show and perform what they are learning in the arts.
The event is free to the public and will offer light refreshments to those in attendance.
“We are really excited,” Marchbank said in an interview. “It’s the second one. I’m sure it’s going to be the same and yet different than last year.”
Last year, the event was at Mountain View Elementary. This year QJHS will host it, as part of the organizers’ desire to showcase a different school each year, Marchbank said.
Art on display will come from students in grades K-12. Most of the displays will carry items students made during school hours, but a few seniors will be able to display some additional pieces as well, Marchbank said.
The workshops will serve as a training ground of sorts for some of the students who might be looking at teaching arts as a career path, Marchbank added.
“It’s great, it’s exciting,” she said. “We need more art teachers. I don’t know if there’s a shortage but there’s certainly plenty of opportunity these days for art teachers, especially in the high school.”
