Unified Soccer earns third place at regionals
OTHELLO – The Quincy Unified Soccer team, which gathers both able-bodied and special-needs children and young adults, finished third at its regional competition last week.
The team did not qualify for state, an honor reserved for the top team in each division, but did return home from the Sandhill Crane City with medals and the memory of two wins in four matches.
The Quincy team played Wenatchee first, losing 2-1. Then came wins against Grandview and the hosts, followed by a tough 5-4 loss to Ephrata.
“It was wonderful,” said Teresa Sawyer, one of the team’s co-coaches. “The only sad thing was, our games started at 9 a.m. and our bus left at 6:15 a.m.. The last game was at 2:15 p.m. Those kids were tired.”
Next school year, the Unified Soccer team will welcome a sister sport during the winter: Quincy’s very own Unified Basketball squad, Sawyer said.
