Volleyball wins thriller in 5

The Lady Jacks went the distance to beat the visiting Greyhounds on Tuesday. It appeared they would dispatch Grandview (1-4, 4-6) fairly easily after opening the match with a 25-14 win.
Yet that was not the case. It took five games to decide the victor, but the Lady Jacks (3-2, 7-3) prevailed 25-14, 23-25, 25-22, 25-27, 15-7.
“Sometimes you have to dig deeper than you think,” said senior Liz Nielson. “Intensity and teamwork.”
The middle blocker (six kills, two assists, 7-7 serving) was one of the main reasons Quincy won the fifth set by eight points. The memory of being defeated in five sets last season to the Lady Hounds was on her mind as she picked up a pair of kills in the final five points of the match.
As much as Nielson wanted the win, it was clear the defense of senior Kaitlin Ramsey helped fuel the fire. Holding an 11-7 lead after Nielson’s fifth kill of the game and not wanting to let go of the momentum, Ramsey (29 digs) hit the floor to dig up a hit by the Greyhounds. She got her hand underneath the ball, popped it up and the Lady Jacks went on to win the point. The match point was an ace by outside hitter Natalie Thomsen (20 kills, four aces, 25 digs).
“We knew last year they got us in five,” Nielson said. “They are scrappy and you just have to adjust your game.”

In the opening set, Quincy had a tough time pulling away. It was 14-12 at one point, but they reeled off an 11-2 run. Sophomore outside hitter Alex Bassett (14 kills) had several big kills in the first set. Despite losing the second set, Quincy had some big plays. Thomsen had one of her crushing hits, but Grandview somehow dug it up. The ball went over the net where senior setter Sam Kleyn (7 kills, 27 assists, 12 digs) was waiting for the block.
Quincy came back behind the blocking of senior middle Heidi Bishop (8 blocks, two kills). This was another back and forth game as the teams were knotted at 5-5, 10-10, 20-20, but Bassett put down back-to-back kills for the 25-22 win.
